Norwegian painter Edward Munch painted "Scream" looking at the night sky from November 1883 to February 1894 in the capital Oslo, "from 20 thousand kilometers away".

A new theory suggests that the red clouds in Munch's painting from 1893 are a result of the volcanic eruption on the island of Krakatoa, which is located in present-day Indonesia. Records from local newspapers in Oslo at the time indicate that the eruption caused an aurora in Europe that lasted from November 1883 to February 1884.
