longest century of the empire

Ilber Ortayl wrote a book about the 19th century of the Ottoman Empire. It was first published in 1983 and is still available today. This book looks at the 19th century from a different perspective than other books, and it is meant to be a bridge between the past and the future. It is recommended to read this book after Halil Inalcık's book about the Ottoman Empire from 1300 to 1600.

longest century of the empire

I read a book called Ilber Ortayl? and I found it very interesting. Even though I only read 100 pages, there were so many details that I got lost in it. The author said in the introduction that it might be interesting for people studying history.

longest century of the empire

In the book, there is a lot of detail about what happened in the Balkans. It talks a lot about the Tanzimat period, but not so much about the Constitutional period and how it was formed. It also paints the Tanzimat bureaucrats in a very positive light.

longest century of the empire

Ilber Ortayl, who usually does not like anyone, has a surprisingly compassionate attitude towards the Tanzimat statesmen in his book. As people read it, they are increasingly surprised by his views. It seems that if Cevdet Pasha were in front of him, Ilber Hodja would be very kind and say "how are you, my little lamb?". He believes that the painful century of the Empire began with the "intellectual absolutism of Mustafa Resid Pasha" and ended with the "constitutionalism of Midhad Pasha". This period was probably in the 1940s.
