6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

The news report of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake is likely incorrect. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), the United States National Earthquake Agency, has declared the magnitude to be 7.8 and the intensity to be 8. Those who experienced the earthquake reported that it lasted for approximately 45 seconds, with a magnitude of 7.5 and an intensity of 10. The largest earthquake to occur in Turkey was in Erzincan with a magnitude of 7.9 and an intensity of 12. This situation is very serious and will likely require a great deal of support. The USGS has since updated the magnitude to 9.

Naci Görür was once again proven to be the most accurate guesser when an earthquake occurred, with its epicenter in Kahramanmaraş Pazarcık. Everyone had been expecting the earthquake to be in Istanbul, but Naci had predicted it to be in Southeast Anatolia. It is time to apologize to those who had been critical of Naci, and to wish him good luck.

If you are under debris:
1- Do not use your phone battery or energy unnecessarily.
2- If possible, install and use the "afad emergency call" application.

If you are close to the earthquake zone:
1- Remain quiet.
2- If possible, remove your wifi password and change the wifi name as directed.
3- Do not drive your personal car out of urgency.
4- Approach buildings.
5- Do not congest traffic.
6- Do not make phone lines busy unnecessarily. Communicate over the internet as much as possible.

If you are not in an earthquake zone:
1- If your vehicle is not prepared for winter conditions, do not attempt to reach the area, as this will delay the authorities.

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

An earthquake with its epicenter in Kahramanmaraş caused a giant fire/light image to appear in the city for a few moments before disappearing for some unknown reason. News channels have been broadcasting live from other provinces, but there has been no news from Maraş for 3 hours, which is very concerning. What is happening in Maraş?

9

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

Friends, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake means that there is at least a 150-200 km fault rupture. This means that even if the epicenter is in Pazarcik, someone who is 200 km away is still at zero distance from the earthquake. This means that the impact area of this earthquake is much larger than many earthquakes we have experienced in the recent past. Additionally, because the fault is broken more, the duration of the earthquake is also longer. If you are in an earthquake zone, please do not return to quiet buildings and do not clog up lines and traffic unnecessarily. My prayers are with you.

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

It appears that we have been fortunate in the aftermath of this earthquake, as the number of collapsed buildings is relatively low. It has been said for years that the quality of the buildings is of utmost importance, and it seems that we are finally beginning to understand this. Had this earthquake occurred years ago, the consequences would have been much more severe. Best of luck to us all.

17

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

From what I can observe, this earthquake appears to be around 1.5 minutes long and its intensity is growing. 1.5 minutes is a concerning amount of time, and the video I saw was from the antep region. It is difficult to determine the full extent of the damage until the morning light. Therefore, it is essential to send blankets, coats, gloves, berets, and other necessary items to the affected area as soon as possible. Those who are able to leave their homes should not do so without taking necessary supplies. Our military and authorities are doing their best to save lives, and the rest is up to us citizens.

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

The relevant governorships have declared that there are only 130 buildings in Malatya and 65 buildings in Osmaniye that are in poor condition. Additionally, there are similar reports from other provinces. As I personally witnessed during the Izmir earthquake two years ago, the governor's office was not informed of the destroyed buildings, while the dust from the collapsed buildings filled the entire district. This official information is often slow to come, making the situation look very alarming. Best of luck to everyone.

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

My fellow friends, if you live in an area where earthquakes are experienced or felt intensely, especially if your buildings have been damaged, it is important to leave your home. As someone who has survived an earthquake in Izmit, I can tell you that aftershocks will continue to occur. If the magnitude of the earthquake is particularly high, such as 7.8 or higher, the aftershocks will be even more intense. Therefore, it is important to be prepared. Make sure to pack a backpack with water, food, and energy materials. Additionally, bring a light quilt or blanket to keep yourself warm. May God help us all, as this morning appears to be filled with immense pain.

An earthquake in cold weather is even worse than an earthquake alone. Those who are trapped beneath the rubble and those who are attempting to rescue them will be exposed to the cold, which could make the situation even more dire. Cold weather can be devastating for any plans or scenarios. My deepest sympathies go out to those affected. I hope their wounds heal quickly.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) of Turkey have stated that the Eastern Anatolian Fault is the second largest tectonic structure in the country after the North Anatolian Fault. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 or higher can be extremely destructive to structures that have not been designed to withstand them. Those who experienced the 1999 earthquake know that the duration and the area affected by the quake can be indicative of its magnitude.

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

Unfortunately, the situation is even worse than the Gölcük earthquake. News channels are reporting destruction and broadcasts from the surrounding provinces, not the center. Some of Maraş and Antep have been completely destroyed, and we can only hope that the loss of life is not as great as the Gölcük earthquake, which is a very optimistic wish. The winter apocalypse is very painful. Really.

Shockwaves from the earthquake were detected by Japan's earthquake sensors. The American Geological Survey reported its magnitude to be 7.8, which would make it a larger disaster than the 17 August earthquake and equal in size to the 1939 Erzincan earthquake. It took the waves half an hour to travel 8500 kilometers, demonstrating the immense speed of 17000 kilometers per hour that energy can move at. This serves as a reminder of how interconnected the entire world is.

6 February 2023 Turkey, Gaziantep Earthquake

A local journalist is currently reporting that there has been great destruction in Malatya due to a 6.4 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter located 7 km from Pazarcık. This earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.4, very close to the surface, and is similar in structure to the Marmara earthquake. Authorities have shared that there were two independent earthquakes, and geophysicists have stated that the broken fault line has a wide impact area with a diameter of 600 km2, and many aftershocks of 6 or higher. I am deeply saddened by this news, and the destruction in the eastern and southeastern parts of the country is especially concerning during this winter apocalypse. May God help our citizens.

If you revise the titles of the calls for help in each province, people will be able to communicate more quickly. This may make it easier to reach the relevant authorities or people who are close to the affected areas and who are willing to provide assistance. Please revise the provincial help call titles! If you have contacts in the government, please spread the message. Revise the titles to ensure clarity in the midst of the chaos caused by the earthquake, not only in the affected regions, but also in the aid titles.

It was terrible. Three shakes in a row was too much to bear. I heard the building crack and I ran to my mother in a panic. When she suddenly got up, her blood pressure dropped and she collapsed on me in the doorway. I was both swaying and trying to open my mother's jaw and stick out her tongue. Despite all of this, I thought I wouldn't be afraid. I hope no one has to experience this again.

I am in Mersin now, and I thank those who have offered to help and sent messages. I am in the hospital and they have done tests to check my mother's heart and blood pressure. We are now waiting for the results and the serum. I hope everyone gets well soon and that no one is harmed. I don't know what else to say. Is there anyone who can help?

Now that our condolences and well-wishes have been expressed, we must take a moment to calm down and begin preparations to help those affected by the earthquake. We must keep in mind that this is a winter earthquake and has its own unique conditions. If we have already contacted our relatives in the region, we should leave the phone lines open for those who need them. Those with the means should provide water, packaged ready-to-eat foods, blankets, winter clothes (especially socks, gloves and berets), baby diapers, sanitary pads, batteries, and foods that require heat treatment (e.g. instant soup). Those with more resources should provide generators, handheld radios, flashlights, helmets, helmet lamps, winter boots, and work gloves. Those who can give should donate blood. We must prevent the spread of news that may cause fear and panic, superstitions, and rumors. We should also provide spiritual support to those in the region. We should follow the authorities carefully and be prepared to provide medicines and first aid supplies when requested. We should also ensure that the supplies are packaged and transported in a regular manner. Finally, we should keep our spirits up and not let anxiety and fear spread.

Following the 1999 Lake Earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.4 and caused more than 65,000 casualties according to unofficial information, the aftershocks have been as follows: 04:28 6.6 Durmuslar-Nurdağı (Gaziantep), 04:36 5.6 Yesemek-Islahiye (Gaziantep), 04:58 5.2 Pile-Islahiye (Gaziantep), 05:01 4.7 Cennetpınarı-Pazarcık (Kahramanmaraş), and 05:23 5.4 Sakcagoze-Nurdağı (Gaziantep). This is the biggest earthquake in the history of Turkey, together with the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake (7.9) and the 1976 Ringing Earthquake (7.5). These are very difficult times for our country, and we must remain strong and not unnecessarily dwell on this topic. For more information, please comment on WhatsApp.
